Former member of the British Actors' Equity Association. Steve was known professionally by his stage name Steve Hughes.
Steve started his career in the theatre as a performer / ASM making his debut performance in 1999 as The Grand Vizier in Aladdin at His Majesty's Theatre, Aberdeen. He was invited back to Aberdeen the following year to play The Giant opposite Su Pollard in Jack & The Beanstalk. In 2021, he reprised the role of The Giant, this time at the New Wimbledon Theatre opposite Shane Richie and in 2002, featured as Pirate Starkey in a sold-out run of Peter Pan at the Richmond Theatre alongside Bonnie Langford OBE and Robert Powell.
He joined Royal Caribbean International for five years as Production Manager, combining his love for theatre and travel.
Returning ashore, he managed a number of plays, musicals, opera and ballet representing many of the world’s leading producers in some of the most prestigious venues around the globe, touring extensively throughout the United States, Europe, Scandinavia, Middle East and Asia.
Steve has had the pleasure of working alongside some of the most highly respected creatives in the business, including Gillian Lynne DBE (†), Claude-Michel Schonberg, Andrew Lloyd Webber KG, Carl Davis CBE (†), Stephen Daldry CBE and has managed artists of the highest calibre including Mickey Rooney (†), Richard Wilson OBE, Brian Blessed OBE, Joe Pasquale, Marti Webb, Suranne Jones, John Savident (†), Johnny Briggs MBE (†) and Susan Hampshire CBE .
He made his directing debut at the Liverpool Empire Theatre with Cinderella in 2008, starring Cilla Black OBE (†). The huge budget show received rave reviews and was billed as "Britain's biggest and brightest pantomime" in what was a pivotal time for the city having just been crowned European Capital of Culture.
Steve was General Manager and Executive Producer at Northern Ballet for three years, responsible for securing and programming all their national and international performances, working alongside Artistic Director David Nixon CBE and served as Strategic Advisor to Yorkshire Dance before being appointed by theatre impresario Michael Codron CBE in 2011 to manage the Aldwych Theatre in London's West End for the Nederlander Theatre Group.
Notable shows during his tenure over the past decade include: Dirty Dancing - The Classic Story On Stage (2006 - 2011); Marc Warren in Cool Hand Luke (2011); Top Hat the Musical (2012 - 2013); Stephen Ward the Musical (2013); The Royal Shakespeare Company's Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies (2014); Beautiful: The Carole King Musical (2015 - 2017); Sophia Loren in conversation with Jonathan Ross (2018); Tina - The Tina Turner Musical (2018 - 2025); Hugh Bonneville in Shadowlands (2026).
He has had the personal honour of welcoming and hosting many high-profile guests to performances at the Aldwych Theatre, including Professor Stephen Hawking CBE (†), Tom Cruise, Sophia Loren, Rowan Atkinson CBE, Judi Dench DBE, Michael Caine CBE, Rod Stewart CBE, Cliff Richard CBE, Tina Turner (†), Carole King, Tina Sinatra, Baroness Karren Brady CBE and West Ham United Football Club, Former U.S. President George H. W. Bush (†) and First Lady Barbara Bush (†), Former Prime Minister John Major KG CH and Norma Major DBE, Her Majesty Queen Camilla, The Duke & Duchess of Sussex, The Duchess of Edinburgh and Lady Louise Windsor.
Steve has independently produced a number of shows and concerts in the West End (Garrick Theatre, Harold Pinter Theatre, Hippodrome Theatre), and venues throughout the UK. He has transferred productions overseas to Gibraltar, Barcelona, Milan, Miami (Fillmore Theater & Adrienne Arsht Center), Bangkok (Thailand Cultural Centre), Hong Kong (Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre), Macau (Macau Cultural Centre), Beijing (National Centre for the Performing Arts "Giant Egg") and regularly supplied headline acts to luxury cruise brands, including Celebrity Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line.
Steve was recently granted fellowship of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA).
